Introduction to Research
Guidelines for Paradigm Analyses

1. Choose studies in areas of your interest. For example, if you’re interested in L2 reading comprehension, search for research studies on reading comprehension across age groups.

2. For each article read, analyze it according to the following guidelines:

• What is the problem the researchers are investigating?
• What are the main research questions?
• Can you infer the main research paradigm embedded in the article?
• Find evidence in the article that supports the type of research basic or generic, ethnography, phenomenology, etc. according to Merriam (1998) classification. Explain.

3. Write a paper that answers the above questions for each of the 3 articles.
